Pen Underwriting is one of the largest specialist insurance businesses in the UK, with a Feefo Platinum Trusted Service Award 2025.

From a ‘super start-up’ of a dozen or so brands in 2015, to a single cohesive business, we’re setting our sights on our next milestone – with a bold vision to become a £1bn GWP underwriting & distribution business.
We’ve already built a well-known brand, transformed ourselves operationally and created a multi-class, multi-territory virtual insurer – combining all the security and capabilities you’d expect from an insurance company with the entrepreneurial energy, niche expertise and flexibility that MGAs are known for, as well as a true marketplace for our brokers. We’re now executing on our accelerated growth strategy to bring that £1bn business into reality. Having acquired the highly respected Manchester Underwriting Management in 2021, we added the specialist marine businesses Vessel Protect, Trafalgar Marine Trades, BMM Ports & Terminals, Freeboard Maritime and Fortify Marine to the Pen family in 2023 creating a whole new area of niche expertise.
Strategic hires have also seen us develop and launch new risk solutions for the fast-growing tech sector, intellectual property space and directors & officers to best meet the evolving needs of our brokers and their clients. And, as we look to bring other quality businesses and strategic hires into the Pen family, a shared focus on underwriting discipline and investing in great people remains at the heart of our wish list.
We’ve also created a strong culture of one team, which we call One Pen. An underwriting business, led by underwriters. A business that demonstrates every day the added value it brings to customers, colleagues, coverholders, brokers and capacity providers alike.
